A product, in particular a shoe (10), a ball or a fishing lure, incorporates an impact sensing element (18) made from polymeric piezoelectric material. In response to impact, the material provides an electrical trigger signal to a battery-powered light- or sound-emitting unit which is at least partly moulded into the product, thus causing a monostable circuit (20) in the unit to energise the light- (26) or sound-emitting device from the battery (22). In some embodiments involving light-emitting devices (26) such as LEDs, the light is conducted to an outside surface of the product via one or more optical fibres.
