An exhaust gas particulate trap regeneration device of the type which raises the temperature of exhaust gas flowing through said trap to oxidize carbon deposits in the particulate trap (12). The regeneration device comprises a heat storage structure (20) for accumulating heat energy outside of the normal exhaust gas flow, a heat energy source (26) associated with the heat storage structure (20) for elevating the temperature of said heat storage structure above the oxidation initiation temperature of the carbon deposits, and apparatus (34, 40, 48) for transferring the accumulated heat energy from the heat storage structure (20) to the particulate trap (12) over a period of time such that the carbon deposits in the particulate trap are oxidized. |
