The apparatus comprises a plate (6) for holding a cheque, a drum with rotary wheels for printing an amount in figures, means (4, 17) for moving the drum down towards the plate (6), from a rest position to a printing position, each wheel being integral in rotation with a coding disc bearing a series of codes associated with the numbers on the wheel, means for reading the codes on the coding discs and means, controlled by the reading means, for recording the angular positions of the wheels and therefore the amount of the cheque. The apparatus would be useful to shopkeeper whose turnover is not very great. <IMAGE>
