An economizer (70) is connected to a fluid line which connects the booster compressor (20) and the top-stage compressor (120) of a refrigeration system (10) at a point situated downstream of the branch (by-pass) in order to reduce the load on the booster compressor (20). The flow of the economizer controls the discharge temperature of the second stage and, in addition, interacts with the branch of the booster compressor (20) such that all the flows conveyed to the top stage are at the intake (suction) pressure of the system when the branch is completely open. When the booster compressor (20) has its load completely reduced and when the load reduction valve (62) is completely open, the booster compressor (20) is switched off and the branch flow for the load reduction changes direction in order to allow flow from the condenser (30) to the second stage, ignoring the booster compressor (20) which is switched off. <IMAGE>
