The invention relates to a method of manufacture of an identification plate, especially for registering motor vehicles, and plate thus obtained. The plate obtained includes a thick and transparent fronting plate (3) carrying characters formed in relief on the front face, these being inserted by stamping at the rear and detaching from a backing produced by a coloured rear sheet (5), and a rigid plate (1), for example made of aluminium, assembled on the rear face of the assembly formed by the said stamped transparent fronting plate (3) and the above flexible rear sheet (5). <IMAGE>
