The mechanism is applicable fundamentally to bicycles and also to motor vehicles, for carrying out the relevant speed or gear change. It includes three discs mounted parallel to one another, one for receiving the transmission from the relevant drive means, a second coupled securely to the shaft of the drive wheel for transmitting the latter's movement, and the third provided in order to be linked simultaneously to the two previous ones, forming a rotation assembly, in such a manner that said third disc has projections which are inserted to a greater or lesser extent in facing grooves of the other two, thus producing the linking together of the three discs. Depending on the greater or lesser insertion of these projections, the desired change in speed or gear will be achieved proportionally, all the aforesaid controlled by a traction cable actuated by the driver. <IMAGE>
