[Class 39 (i).] The temperature of the gas or vapour filling of a discharge device is automatically controlled by a bimetallic thermostatic element so as to maintain the vapour pressure at a required value independently of variations in the ambient temperature or in the load. Mercury 13, Fig. 1, is contained within the coolest portion of the tube which is heated by a winding 14 contained within the base 9 or within a socket into which the base is adapted to fit. The winding is connected across the cathode leads 6, 7 and is in series with a thermostatic strip, formed by a bimetallic element 15 and a contact 17 carried by an insulating strip 16. In a modification, a rectifier 20, Fig. 2, is contained within a casing 21. Ventilating doors 22 are pivoted so that they normally open, but are adapted to be closed at a certain temperature by a bimetallic strip 24. Specification 402,147 is referred to.
