A method of obtaining size of improved strength consisting in modifying rosin with maleic acid anhydride in the condensation process, saponifying the condensation product with alkalis, and diluting the obtained size with water to the desired concentration, characterised in that tall oil or balsamic rosin or wood rosin in turpentine or xylene solution, in the presence of (percent by weight given in reference to 43.86 parts by weight of solid rosin) of 4.5-5.7% by weight of drying oil and/or semi-drying oil and/or drying oil fatty acids and/or semi-drying oil fatty acids, is modified with maleic acid anhydride applied in the amount of 10-12% by weight, by heating in a temperature of 140-220 degrees C until condensation product of acid value higher than 20mg KOH/g is obtained, and then the product is modified at the second stage in a temperature of 120-140 degrees C with a mixture of 7.0-8.5% by weight of ethylene glycol and 4.5-5.6% by weight of butanol, and after that the modification product is saponified optimally for 1 hour in a temperature of 100-110 degrees C with alkalis, preferably with 16.5-20.0% by weight of solid soda lye used as a water solution with concentration of 35-40% by weight, and the obtained size is diluted with water until viscosity of 50-150 seconds according to nr 4 Ford cup in the temperature of 20 degrees C is obtained.
