This method includes the following steps: - after possibly having reshaped and cleaned the tapped holes in the ring, a stud (40) equipped with a temporary protective cap is screwed into each of them; - the holes of the sector of the backing ring are slipped over the studs, until the backing ring comes into contact with the ring; - the caps are removed from the studs; and - a fastening nut (58) is screwed onto each stud. Application to the fitting of shutoff plates in the waterbox of a steam generator of a pressurised-water nuclear reactor. <IMAGE>
