A fibre feed channel for an open-end friction spinning machine has a sudden expansion prior to the start of the exit contraction. The expansion can be a width or breadth step with a ratio of 1.2-2.0. pref. 1.6. A fibre free tube for an open end friction spinning head has a sudden expansion just before the channel contracts towards the feed exit to the opening roller. A dead space is created in the direction of air flow which causes an eddy. This improves the fibre distribution and gives better yarn properties. The best results were obtained with an expansion ratio of 1.6 and an exit width (a) of 100mm and a breadth (b) of 0.8mm. USE/ADVANTAGE - The invention gives a better fibre distribution to the opening roller than the conventional continuously contracting design of channel
