The well source includes a body (1), anchoring blocks (5, 6), the opening of which off-centres the body and presses a rigid impact piece (11) flat against the wall of the well. This piece acts as an end wall for a cylinder whose axis is directed radially. A piston/mass slides in the cylinder (12) between a back position where it can be retained by engagement in its side wall of balls pressed radially by a pneumatic pressure and a position of impact against the impact piece (11) against which it is thrown, on command, by a pressurised gas contained in a tank (30). Application to seismic prospecting at low and medium frequency. <IMAGE>
