In a process for three-dimensional mapping of inner spaces, the planes 1, 2 of the inner space, such as the walls, the floor and the roof, are determined by, starting from a measuring station M of known position, measuring the coordinates of a sufficiently large number of points 1a, 1b, 1c; 2a, 2b, 2c and, on the basis thereof, determining the positions of the planes and their lines of intersection with the aid of a computer program. The coordinates of the special objects associated with the planes 1, 2, such as doors, windows and the like, are determined and the special objects placed with the aid of the computer program on the corresponding planes in the mapping. On the basis of the lines of intersection of the planes determined in the process and delimiting the inner space, the area of the plane delimited by the abovementioned lines is calculated with the aid of the computer program and the area information recorded in a recording device, such as the memory of a computer. To data of the same plane there are also attached, in the recording operation, data describing one or more other characteristics of the plane. <IMAGE>
