The beam is brought to a substantially lineal focus (26) in an aspherical optical telescope arrangement and interrupted at that level by a slotted disc (28) in which the length of each radial slot (30) is at least equal to that of the focal line, and its azimuthal extent is pref. greater. The disc rotates in a plane contg. the axis of a hollow mirror (22) whose internal surface is a cone having a vertical angle of 90 deg. This may be mfd. of O2-free high-purity Cu. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for laser Q-switching. Pulsed source of optical pumping energy can be synchronised with simply constructed device which is readily adjustable.
