After the goods have been grouped and before they are packed, the support elements (32,33) are moved into the interspaces between each individual group, with each two support elements associated with one group. After the individual goods of one group are combined into one package unit, the support elements are removed from this unit and returned to the starting position. The front support element in the running direction moves from the side to in front of the relevant group, whilst the rear support element (33) in the running direction moves from above into the interspace.
