In an absorber for removing acid impurities from a waste gas stream (I) by contact with neutral or basic salt(s) (II), (II) is present in the open pores of a dimensionally stable, thermostable inorg. matrix (III), which is inert towards (II), (II) being in the liquid aggregate state at least during absorption. Pref. (II) is an alkali(ne earth) metal salt, including modifications contg. water of crystallisation, pref. a Li, Na, K, Ca, Mg or Ba nitrate, nitrite, phosphate or carbonte. (III) has a high m.pt. and pref. consists of Al2O3, MgO, SiO2, ZrO2, TiO2, Zr silicate, forsterite, feldspar, cordierite, mullite and/or glass phases. The pores in (III) have a dia. of 0.1-500, pref. 0.3-200, esp. 0.5-100 microns and form 50-95, pref. 60-90, esp. 65-85% of the total vol. USE/ADVANTAGE - The absorber is used for purifying (I), pref. hot (I), esp. hot (I) from a film for firing ceramics (claimed).
