PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide knock sensors suitable for sensing engine knock and piston slap in combustion engines.SOLUTION: A method of distinguishing piston slap from engine knock includes obtaining a fundamental frequency of a cylinder 26, the cylinder having a thrust face 74 and an anti-thrust face 76, receiving a first signal from a first knock sensor 32 mounted on the cylinder 26, and evaluating whether a first plurality of amplitudes of the first signal at the fundamental frequency and one or more harmonic frequencies of the fundamental frequency exceed a piston slap threshold value.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3 |
