PURPOSE:To prevent cracking by impregnating a thermosetting resin into a cellulose-based compact and firing this compact in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:A cellulose-based material such as sawdust is compacted into a prescribed shape and a the resulting compact is impregnated into a thermosetting resin such as phenolic resin. This compact is then fired at >=500 deg.C, e.g. at 1,100-1,300 deg.C in the case of sawdust in a nonoxidizing atmosphere of N2, etc., to obtain the objective carbon sintered compact reinforced with glassy carbon formed by the carbonization of the thermosetting resin and free from cracks. |
