Described is a method for obtaining a plant having a height of less than the height of a corresponding wild type plant, comprising the steps of transforming tissue of the wild type plant with one or more genes of the Ri plasmid of Agrobacterium rhizogenes; allowing the transformed tissue to develop roots; selecting a putatively transformed root having a hairy root phenotype; growing said root on a regeneration medium; regenerating a shoot from said root, thereby generating a transformed rooted plantlet; growing said transformed rooted plantlet into a mature transformed mother plant having a height of less than 65% of that of the corresponding wild type plant; preparing a transformed cutting from the mature transformed mother plant, or from progeny thereof, allowing a rooted transformed plantlet to develop from the transformed cutting, and treating the rooted transformed plantlet with gibberellin, therewith allowing the plantlet to develop in a mature plant having a height between the height of the transformed mother plant of step and the height of the wild type plant of step. |
