A bump stop assembly for a motor vehicle door. The assembly comprises a bump stop 10 to be coupled to a vehicle door or frame; a door closure depth gauge 106 movably coupled to the bump stop; and a closure pad 108 configured to couple to the bump stop or to the other of the frame or door; wherein the thickness of the closure pad required in the bump stop assembly can be determined from a protrusion of the door closure depth gauge relative to the bump stop. The depth gauge initially protrudes from the bump stop (figure 4a) without a pad; upon closing the door the gauge is pushed inward and upon opening the door the exposed portion of the depth gauge determines the thickness of the cushion pad 108 required (fig.4b). The depth gauge is preferably slidably mounted with the bumper but may be pivotally mounted and may be removed and re-used or left in place. A kit of multiple closure cushion pads having different thicknesses is also claimed. The gauge and closure bumper pads 108 may be colo ur coded.
