A vehicle may be steered without a driver's hands being on a vehicle steering control mechanism, typically a steering wheel 115. A presence of an object, such as a pedestrian, within a predetermined distance of the vehicle may be detected using data from at least one object detection sensor 110, for example a camera, radar or lidar, providing data to a passive safety system, a lane control system, a speed control system or a brake control system. A steering control mechanism hands-on mode can then be enabled based at least in part on the presence of the object, and optionally in part based on the vehicle speed or data from a remote server 125 or navigation system 111. Preferably a message is provided to the driver if the drivers hands are detected to not be on steering control mechanism 115. |
