The invention relates to a method for coating a substrate with a microporous layer. In particular, a simple and comparatively favorable and ecologically harmless method is proposed, by means of which the thickness of the substrate including the coating can be set well. The method according to the invention is characterized by at least the following steps: mixing at least one physical and/or chemical blowing agent into an elastomer mixture in a first step and shaping the elastomer mixture containing the physical and/or chemical blowing agent by means of a calender (3) or a roller-head installation in at least one further step, and applying the calandered elastomer mixture containing the physical and/or chemical blowing agent to a substrate (1) to be coated in at least one further step and heating and blowing the coating containing the physical and/or chemical blowing agent by means of at least one heat source (4) in a further step.
