Provided is a method for producing a surface-modified biofiber, the method including a first polymerization step for adhering onto the surface of a biofiber a first polymer which is obtained by living radical polymerization of a first monomer in a reaction solution that contains the biofiber, the first monomer, and a solvent, so as to obtain a hydrophilic block (A) which comprises the first polymer and which is disposed on the surface of the biofiber. The method also includes, following the first polymerization step, a second polymerization step of polymerizing a second polymer, which is obtained by adding a second monomer to the reaction solution and effecting living radical polymerization of the second monomer, at a growing end of the first polymer so as to obtain a hydrophobic block (B) which comprises the second polymer and which is layered on the outside of the hydrophilic block (A). The surface free energy values of the biofiber, the first polymer, the second polymer, and the solvent satisfy the condition represented by formula (1): EBF > EA > EB > ES (In formula (1), EBF denotes the surface free energy of the biofiber, EA denotes the surface free energy of the first polymer, EB denotes the surface free energy of the second polymer, and ES denotes the surface free energy of the solvent.) |
