The invention relates to a process for the production of cellulose oligomers (cellooligomers) using endoglucanases and to the use in various technical fields of the oligomers produced.

a) cellulose (cellulosic starting material) is cleaved hydrolytically using at least one endoglucanase (EG) (E.C.3.2.1.4) in an aqueous reaction medium, and b) the reaction product, which comprises one or more cellooligomers, i.e. a cellooligomer fraction, is isolated from the reaction medium.
