The present invention provides a method and apparatus for setting the state of a contact in an address book. The method comprises: receiving a start event for an address book application installed on a mobile terminal, and starting the address book application; adding a state setting interface for selection from multiple pieces of state information to a user entry of the address book application; receiving, at the state setting interface, a selection event for state information, and presenting the state information corresponding to the selection event at the user entry. With the present invention, a new state setting function is added to an address book application, a user can select different state information according to actual requirements, and the addition of the new function resolves the problem in the prior art of undiversified functions of address books and improves user experience.
