PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus capable of improving focus detection accuracy in a scene whose luminance and contrast are low and to provide a method for controlling the imaging apparatus.SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus includes an imaging element which divides the pupil area of a photographic optical system in a pupil division direction and can generate a plurality of image signals based on a luminous flux after passing through a different pupil partial area. The focus adjustment of the photographic optical system is performed on the basis of the defocus amount of the photographic optical system calculated on the basis of the correlation amount of a pair of focus detection signals based on the image signal acquired from the imaging element. The imaging apparatus has a first focus detection mode for generating a pair of focus detection signals on the basis of the image signal which at least has resolution equal to the spatial resolution of the imaging element in the pupil division direction and in which thinning-out is not performed in a direction different from the pupil division direction. Furthermore, the imaging apparatus has a second focus detection mode for generating a pair of focus detection signals on the basis of the image signal which has the resolution lower than the spatial resolution of the imaging element in the pupil division direction and in a different direction.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 |
