PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a smoke detection system and method which can be applied for active video smoke detection.SOLUTION: A particle detection system 100, for example an active video smoke detection system, includes: one illumination means 102 for directing a radiation beam 106 through a part of an air space 110 to be monitored; an image sensor 104 positioned to capture images of a part of the beam 106 from the illumination means 102; and means 107 to analyze the captured images for detecting presence of particles within the space. For improving sensitivity, usability, and robustness of particle detection, the system includes a step of configuring the illumination means 102 to create a curtain of light or a rapidly-scanned beam across the air space 110, and a reflector to steer or change a direction of the beam reflected from the illumination means 102.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 |
