A vehicle access system 10, the system 10 comprising: a control means 34 controlling access to a vehicle 12 based on an output from a motion sensor 22,24 which detects required motion of a user in proximity to a vehicle 12; and an output from a proximity sensor 28 means which detect the presence of a specified remote unit 30 within a required proximity of a vehicle 12; the control means 34 is configured to permit access if a required motion of a user is detected and a specified remote unit 30 is detected within a required proximity, but if a required motion of a user is detected but the presence of a specified remote unit 30 within a required proximity of a vehicle 12 is not detected, an access failure signal is provided to a user outside of the vehicle 12. The access failure signal may be audible, visual and/or comprise an illumination sequence of one or more lights 44 of the vehicle. The specified remote unit 30 may be a key fob. The permitting access to the vehicle 12 may comprise unlocking the vehicle 12 and/or open or close a vehicle load space closure or tailgate 14, the load space being a trunk, boot or the like. |
