The present invention addresses the problem of providing a multifuel engine capable of preventing the production of harmful exhaust emissions and preventing a reduction in the output of the engine. A multifuel engine (1) includes a low compression cylinder group (LSG) and a high compression cylinder group (HSG). The low compression cylinder group (LSG) is constructed with gas-fired cylinders that are supplied with first gas fuel (natural gas) and ignite the first gas fuel with a spark from a spark plug. The high compression cylinder group (HSG) has a higher compression ratio than the low compression cylinder group (LSG) and is constructed with dual-fuel-fired cylinders that are supplied with second gas fuel (natural gas) and light oil and ignite the second gas fuel and the light oil by igniting the light oil with the heat of compression in a combustion chamber. In a low rotation range including a startup range, only the low compression cylinder group (LSG) performs the ignition. In a high rotation range, at least the high compression cylinder group (HSG) performs the ignition. |
