May 2, 1935, No. 13128. [Class 53] Gases generated in a primary cell escape through porous tubes 15 which penetrate the electrolyte completely or partially. The tubes may be made of cotton and may be woven or braided and they may be treated with oils, waxes, metal soaps or other substances to render them impermeable to the electrolyte. The tubes may be straight as shown in Fig. 2, and may be closed at their lower ends by ebonite plugs 17 and reinforced at their upper ends by ebonite tubes 16. The tubes are inserted in position by introducing a metal rod into each tube and pushing both the rod and the tube through the electrolyte 9 and then withdrawing the rod. Instead of using plugs 17 the tubes may be closed by a thread binding or by working together the threads of the material forming the tubes. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which a porous tube 15 of U-shape is used, both ends being open and extending either through the sealing 12 or terminating below the sealing as shown, a vent passage 18 being provided through the sealing. |
