[Class 82 (ii)] A classifying or separating chamber having a sump at the bottom, an inlet some distance above the sump, and an opening in the wall positioned below the inlet and covered with a flexible diaphragm by means of which a pulsating movement is imparted to the material in the chamber is provided either in the feed conduit of a flotation apparatus or connected to an outlet below the impeller or in both places. Fig. 3 shows a flotation cell, divided into an agitation zone and a froth-forming zone by a grating 26 and having an air inlet pipe 27 and a rotary impeller 28 which may have radial blades 29 on its underside. Tailings pass over an adjustable weir 25 and a rotary skimmer 34 carries froth &c. over a lip 24. The pulp is fed to the cell through a separating chamber 38 comprising a sump 39 with a valve 40 for intermittent discharge of the heavy particles. An opening 41 in the wall of the chamber below the pulp inlet 45 is covered with a flexible diaphragm 42 to which a pulsating movement is imparted by an electromagnet 43 and a spring 44. The heavier tailings fall into the sump and the remainder passes to the agitation zone of the flotation cell through the conduit 36. A similar separating chamber 47 may be connected to an outlet 46 below the impeller, whereby heavy tailings are removed from the cell. The chambers 38 and 47 may be provided with pipes by means of which additional water may be supplied either for dilution of the pulp or to increase the separating effect. Fig. 1 shows a separating chamber for use in conjunction with a flotation cell in which the pulsating action is produced by pneumatic or hydraulic means. The opening 16 in the wall of the chamber 8, below the inlet 9 but above the sump 10, is closed by a flexible diaphragm 17 which forms one wall of a pressure chamber 14 to which liquid or gas under pressure is supplied intermittently through a conduit 19 provided with a rotary valve 18. At the top of the pressure chamber 14 is an air-compression dome 20 having an overflow or relief port 21. |
