A method and an apparatus for converting content by a terminal in a multimedia system are provided. The method includes acquiring reference information for converting a first content based on a Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) transport stream to a second content based on a media file format and converting the first content to the second content using the reference information.

1. A method of converting content by a terminal, the method comprising:
obtaining reference information for converting a first content to a second content, the first content being based on a transport stream for the content, the second content being based on a media file format for the content; and converting, by the terminal, the first content to the second content using the reference information, wherein the reference information includes a fragment indicator distinguishing a movie fragment of the media file format, wherein the transport stream includes at least one of video elementary streams and audio elementary streams, and wherein the media file format includes a media data field including media data and a media header field including metadata.
