PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an energy absorbing steering column enabling an upper shaft to move relative to an upper tube and enabling shortening of the axial length of the steering column.SOLUTION: An energy absorbing steering column includes: an upper shaft 1a which has a bearing 3 supported in an upper tube 10 and is rotatably supported in the upper tube via the bearing by which a steering shaft 1 is integrally held; and a lower shaft relatively movably supported relative to the upper shaft. Together with the bearing, the upper shaft is supported so as to be movable to the vehicle forward side relative to the upper tube by a predetermined distance. A press-fitting groove 10a, a step portion 10b and a lock portion (caulking portion 10c) are formed in the upper tube. The step portion inhibits the bearing from moving to the vehicle rearward side, and the lock portion inhibits the bearing from moving to the vehicle forward side.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3 |
