A method for controlling a modular multi-level converter (12) comprises the steps of: collecting control input variables (26) from the converter (12); transmitting the control input variables (26) to a controller (14) of the converter (12) via a first communication medium (32); determining, in the controller (14), an actual state of the converter (12) and at least one control output variable (28) based on a model (30) of the converter (12); and transmitting the control output variable (28) to the converter (12) for controlling the converter via a second communication medium (28).
