A retaining clip for a lock of hair comprising a clip A, B made from deformable material that is bent around the hair strands C to retain the hair strands so that the lock of hair can be kept as a memento. The retaining clip is U-shaped and in use, the strands of hair are placed within the U shape and upstanding ends B are folded over to lock the hair in place. The clip may be closed by a thumb or a mechanical device such as pliers. Preferably the clip is made from a metal and may be made from silver or gold. The hair may be bound by a clip a short distance from the cutting line or mid distance from the cutting line and the tip.
