An apparatus for picking up a panorama image by using an electronic compass and a method thereof are provided to offer photographing region information including previously photographed position information through a display unit. A storing unit(130) stores direction information previously photographed. An input unit(135) generates an image pickup command in response to the press of an image pickup button. An image sensor picks up an image of an object in response to the image pickup command and generates image data. An electronic compass unit outputs direction information of an image pickup device of object pickup time. A control unit(145) judges whether the direction information is included in the previously photographed direction information. If the direction information is not included in the direction information previously photographed, the control unit(145) generates a file name of the image data by using the direction information, and stores the generated file name in the storing unit(130).
