An aerosol-generating device (10) comprising a heating element (90) coupled to a controller (19) is provided. The controller (19) is programmed to actuate the heating element (90) through a first thermal cycle in which the temperature of the heating element is raised to a first temperature to form an aerosol from an aerosol-forming substrate (30) and is programmed to actuate the heating element (90) through a second thermal cycle in which the temperature of the heating element (90) is raised to a second temperature, higher than the first temperature, to thermally liberate organic material adhered to or deposited on the heating element (90). The controller (19) is programmed to actuate the heating element (90) through the second thermal cycle automatically when the aerosol-forming substrate (30) is removed from contact with the heating element (90). Methods of controlling an aerosol-generating device, and using an aerosol-generating device are also provided.
