A centrifugal compressor comprising a housing with an annular outlet volute 223 and diffuser passage 228. An impeller with blades 225 rotates about an axis, such that the tips of the blades 226 sweep across the diffuser inlet 227. An annular recess 234 is located at the inlet 227, and features a stepped profile 235 at the inlet end that extends towards a diffuser outlet 231. The recess has a constant depth for most of its length towards the diffuser outlet 231, which reduces gradually at its end. The recess may help to reduce turbulent flow through the diffuser. The compressor may be used as part of a turbocharger. |
