PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact zoom lens having a high variable power ratio and having good optical performance over an entire variable power area, and an imaging apparatus.SOLUTION: A zoom lens includes a first lens group G1 having positive refractive power, a second leng group G2 having negative refractive power, a third lens group G3 having positive refractive power, and a subsequent lens group having positive refractive power as a whole that are arranged in this order from an object side. When power is varied from a wide angle end to a telephoto end, the first lens group G1 is fixed in an optical axis direction, and at least the second lens group G2 is moved so that a distance between the first lens group G1 and the second lens group G2 increases and a distance between the second lens group G2 and the third lens group G3 decreases.
