<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent toner on an intermediate transfer belt from fusing, due to the heating of a fixing unit blown onto a transfer belt, when an image forming apparatus makes an emergency stop. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has a fixing device wherein a plurality of fixing bodies perform heat fixation, while rotating in contact and have a contacting/leaving mechanism, and a cooling fan for cooling the fixing device. The image forming apparatus has a first separation mode, in which the fixing bodies are released from being pressed against each other to be separated, after the image forming apparatus performs image formation; a second separation mode in which the fixing bodies are only released from being pressed, when the image forming apparatus stops in emergency during the image formation on condition that there is no transfer sheet on the fixing device; and a third separation mode in which the fixing bodies are not released form being pressed, when there is a transfer sheet on the fixing device. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
