<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device ensuring a high contrast display. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device is constructed by interposing a liquid crystal layer between a pair of substrates 10, 20, and disposing a first optical compensation plate 70 and a second optical compensation plate 80 each having uniaxial negative anisotropy of a refractive index on the outer surface side of the substrate 10.
