<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cryogenic catheter having a tip portion which can deflect and conduct accurate positioning in a patient's blood vascular system according to the requirement for surgical treatment and which can be manufactured comparatively easily, used easily, and comparatively cost effective. <P>SOLUTION: A cryogenically cooled apparatus 100 comprises a handle portion 104, a catheter 102 extending distally from the handle and transmitting a torque imparted by the handle, and a main shaft portion 190 of the catheter having a substantially uniform diameter. A deflectable segment 107 at the distal end of the main shaft has a minimum diameter that is smaller than the diameter of the main shaft 190 and a tip portion 110 disposed distally of the deflectable segment has a diameter greater than the minimum diameter. The tip portion 110 has a heat transfer plane defining an expansion chamber for refrigerant fluid and contacting the expansion chamber, a resilient component adapted to define a preferred plane of deflection of the deflectable segment 107, and an actuator connected to a distal portion of the catheter and adapted to impart a curvature to the deflectable segment 107. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
