[Class 99 (ii)] [See also Group V] A tube or other hollow article is formed from a thermoplastic composition by passing a softened strip 10 longitudinally through a passage such as a metal tube 16 so as to cause the strip to assume the shape of the interior of the passage with its edges abutting, and hardening the shaped article. The composition may have a cellulose derivative basis and various examples are given. The strip may be softened in a tank 12 of water or other liquid heated by electric or other means. The metal tube 16 may have a cooling jacket 17 insulated at 18 as bv asbestos or cork and brine or cold water may be circulated through the jacket. The end of the strip may be tapered at 11 and attached by a hook 14 to a cable 15 for pulling it through the tube. The tube 16 may be shaped in cross-section as required and it may be circular at the entrance and of star or other shape at the other end. For thin strips, the longitudinal edges thereof may be perpendicular to the strip, but for thicker strips they may be scarfed. After the strip is shaped and set, it may be placed in a solvent bath and the seam opened by running a blade therethrough to allow the solvent to penetrate, the seam closing up after the blade. The strip may be composed of layers of different appearance or composition or both and it may be transparent over part of its width to produce an article with a transparent window. Various examples of solvent are given such as chloroform or acetone, or a cement may be used such as a vinyl or cresyllic resinous product, a cellulose derivative or a rubber adhesive. The shaped tube may be further shaped as by drawing or expansion. Various examples are given of plasticizers, pigments, fillers, ornamental material and fire retardants which the composition may contain. Optical tubing may be produced, the seam being then left open and a metal rim or rod inserted. Covered rods may be produced by feeding the rod through the shaping passage simultaneously with the strip. |
