To install a connection fitting 300 into an aperture formed in a wall of a main pipeline in the making of a service connection between a side connection and a main pipeline, an apparatus 130 is used. This apparatus 130, which is a pig or robot, comprises a propulsion means and an installation means. The installation means may comprise a storage device 200 for storing connection fittings 300 intended for installation, a conveyance device for conveying a connection fitting 300 to an installation location, and an insertion device 240, e.g. a scissor lift mechanism, for inserting the connection fitting 300 into the aperture formed in the wall of the main pipeline. A system using the robot 130 to install the connection fitting 300 further comprises control means to control the operation of the robot. The connection fitting 300 can comprise primary and secondary connection portions for forming primary and secondary weld joints to complete the making of a fluid-tight service connection via the fitting 300. |
