A method for recovering polyolefin from a source mixture comprising the steps of introducing the source mixture into a three-phase decanter centrifuge means which uses a liquid medium and separating by density the source mixture into polyolefin output stream and a contaminant waste stream; wherein substantially rigid particles are added to the source mixture to enhance throughput of the centrifuge. The rigid particles preferably comprise plastic particles, particularly polypropylene and increase the bulk density of the source mixture. The rigid particles may be incorporated into the polyolefin end product or extracted from the output stream using their optical, magnetic properties or size. Preferably, the liquid medium and output streams are heated. A sorting and sizing step may be included before the separation step. An apparatus is also disclosed comprising a sorter adapted to extract polyolefin material from the source material upstream from a three-phase decanter centrifuge means and an agglomeration means is provided downstream which receives separated polyolefin material from the three-phase decanter centrifuge means. The apparatus and methods are for recovering, ideally for reuse, polyolefin plastic, for example polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), from residues or by-products, such as carpet waste. The apparatus and methods allow for improved extraction and agglomeration of polyolefin from waste streams. |
