Disclosed is an apparatus and method for providing a barrier coating 400 for a surface, wherein the apparatus comprises a layer 302 comprising a plurality of two-dimensional platelets 302 of a first material such as mica, bentonite clays, boron nitride or graphene oxide; and at least another layer 403 covering the first layer. The layer of platelet or plate-like particles stops the ingress of moisture and is packed to allow the surface to bend and flex. The coating can be used within an OLED device. In some arrangements the layers have hydrophobic parts defining passages of a hydrophilic material thus being able to draw away contaminants from one region to another. |
