Plural geophysical sensors are arranged on a seabed to form an array of cells 715 each having an interior region having no sensors therein and large enough to contain a 500 m diameter circle (i.e. highly sparse). The sensors may be arranged on a plurality of parallel lines; a second plurality of parallel lines arranged perpendicular to the first plurality of lines to define rectangular cells. A line may contain curved segments 713 connecting parallel line segments, head and neck regions, or an array of loop regions. Plural lines may form alternating bulge and neck regions or wave shapes. A signal source towed by a vessel or on an underwater vehicle may generate a seismic signal, and seismic data may be recorded from the sensors. A computer may determine a seismic gather for a location in a formation, and may interchange source and sensor definitions of the gather to generate image data using higher-order reflections, perhaps to monitor a hydrocarbon reservoir. |
