PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an enough response rate for an animated picture and high contrast with respect to a reflection type liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: The device has a guest-host liquid crystal layer 12 held between an upper transparent electrode 11 and a lower transparent electrode 13 formed on a pair of an upper substrate 10 and a lower substrate 14 disposed facing each other, respectively, and the device has a scattering reflection plate 16 on one face of the liquid crystal layer 12 and a 1/4 wavelength plate 15 disposed between the liquid crystal layer 12 and the scattering reflection plate 16. The scattering reflection plate 16 has such scattering characteristics that when light enters at α=45 deg. incident angle, the angle width which gives the half of the reflectance in the regular reflection direction ranges of 10-70 deg.. The liquid crystal layer 12 shows homogeneous alignment or homeotropic alignment. Moreover, the liquid crystal used has such scattering characteristics that when light enters at α=45 incident angle to the scattering reflection plate 16, the reflectance R in the regular reflection direction is >=20%. |
