[Class 110 (ii)] A rotary compressor or pump comprises a rotor 14 having a number of spiral-shaped grooves 15 in its periphery, and rotary abutments 18 on shafts 33, which have lobes 19 fitting into the grooves to impel fluid which enters the grooves by way of inlet ports in the stator to delivery ports 21. Sliding valves controlled by hand 24 may be provided to vary the point at which the delivery ports are opened to a groove and so control the degree of compression of a fluid. Anti-friction linings 13 may be fitted to the stator bore. The grooves may be circular or involute shaped in cross-section, and may so mesh with the lobes 19 as to drive the abutments. Normally the main shaft 12 and the abutments shafts 33 are driven by synchronous motors, through gearing or other means may be used to drive the shafts 33. The mountings for motor driving shafts 33 may be adjustable. The inlet and delivery ports may be in the rotor or in the abutments as described in modified arrangements. The inlet ports may be controlled by valves. A three stage compressor is described in which the three stages are similar except for the diminishing sizes of the rotor grooves and meshing lobes. Fig 15 shows the valves 41 ... 43 controlling the delivery valves of the three stages A, B, C, and further valves 52 in a chamber 50, which control the byepassing of fluid from outlet ports 54, to inlet ports 53, for each stage. A push rod below and parallel to a guide 49, upon which sleeves 48 slide, is provided with cam grooves each with a roller within which actuates a hinged lever 56 which in turn engages sleeves 48 and so moves the valves 41 ... 43 to right or left. Stops 63 limit the axial travel of pins 45, but the valves 41 ... 43 may be moved further to the left against springs 47. In a modification wherein the fluid is delivered through ports in the rotor, the delivery is controlled by a rotary valve controlled by worm and worm gear. In a further arrangement in which fluid is delivered through passages in an abutment, the delivery pressure is controlled by a valve upon a sleeve around the abutment shaft, which is rotated by means of a projecting arm. The passages in the abutment may be duplicated upon the two faces. |
