An arrangement for actuating a pivotable vane in a gas turbine engine, eg a variable inlet guide vane (VIGV) or a variable stator vane (VSV), comprises an actuator having a support plate 4 and a pivotable plate 2 which is fixedly connected to the pivotable element so that the pivotable plate 2 and the pivotable element are pivotable about a pivot axis 3 eg on a tubular casing. The support plate 4 may be pivoted about an axis 5 on an actuator ring. At least one actuation element 6, 7 extends from the support plate 4 to proximal a transverse edge portion of the pivotable plate 2 perpendicular to the pivot axis. The or each actuation element 6,7 is formed of a material, eg a shape memory alloy (SMA), eg a copper-based or Ni-Ti-based SMA, or a piezoelectric material, that changes dimension upon application of external energy, eg heat, so that a change in the length of the or each actuation element 6,7 occurs to rotate the pivotable plate 2 and pivotable element about the pivot axis 3.
