The mechanism, consisting of a pinion (2) on the steering column engaging with a rack (3) on a transmission bar (4), with a pusher (10) to hold them together. The pusher is located on the end (14) of a hollow bush (11) which faces the bar (4), and slides in a recess (12) in a fixed component. Its thrust is provided by a single block (23) of a supple material, cylindrical in shape and preferably with a high degree of resilience. The cylinder has its axis lying perpendicular to the transmission bar and has outer and inner cylindrical reinforcing elements (24, 25), each having an L-shaped cross-section.
